Dee Dee King 'Standing In The Spotlight'

Yes. I’m well aware that I haven’t updated in a good long while. I appreciate all the emails. It’s nice to know that people are out there reading my little battle against psychosis.

It’s not easy to update as much as I’d like… Work actually gets in the way most of the time. And that is especially true in the summer months. There are promotions and remotes going on nearly every day at both Rock 92 and 1075KZL. Throw in a car giveaway from Modern Automotive with our Bubbalympics and Summertime Brewsfestival… Well, that’s the reason liquor and beer company stocks are skyrocketing.

I had every intention of updating yesterday, but my nieces were around and it’s difficult to write an entertaining update when they’re running through the place like dung flinging monkeys.

Once the nieces were gone, so was the mood to write. The television and couch conspired against my creative will and managed to lure me into a copious amount of inactivity.

I managed only to get my laundry done before I crash landed in front of The Closer.

I haven’t talked to my friends like I should… Once again, I tend to “cocoon up” when I get really busy. Working 10 hour days without a break makes me very antisocial.

--If you heard it live on the air with 2GNC last week, then you know that I took a ride in a dragster. If you didn’t know that… Well… I took a ride in a dragster. A really fast one.

It amazes me how I can work at a rock station with a bunch of sissies. No one really wanted to do it. But I jumped at the chance to go screaming down a drag strip in a 3-seat dragster (the only one in North America). I looked forward to it all week long.

And the experience was greater than I imagined.

After my first ride along in Roy Hill’s dragster, he asked, “Is that better than sex?”

“Yes!” I yelled. “Because I didn’t get hurt riding in the dragster.”

--I had complete faith in Bubba and his drag racing abilities. I mean… After all, he didn’t want to die.

Bubba was upbeat and joking around while the dragster was being prepped for the day. Now if he had talked about being depressed… I don’t think I would have climbed into that machine capable of speeds up to 160mph on a strip an 1/8th of a mile long at Piedmont Dragway.

I could feel the power of the engine rumbling behind me after Bubba fired that joker up. Through my body, I could feel every vibration as we pulled onto the strip. The dragster was like a snarling and growling dog, but I wasn’t afraid of its bite.

Bubba warmed the tires by spinning them while the engine roared louder than Motorhead behind me. Then he eased back to the starting line. I moved my helmeted head forward because I didn’t want my head to rattle against the roll cage like dice in a Yahtzee cup.

When Bubba let go of the brake, my head was shoved back and we tore down the strip quicker than a Wiccan out of Liberty University.

It was exhilarating!

And I’m fortunate enough to do it twice. Once to record the video and the second time was for the 2GNC show with Biggie providing color commentary.

Here’s the edited result:

You can take a ride too! Just contact Roy Hill’s Dragracing School.

If one has to be good, might as well go all out and be "Nature Boy" good! Wooooooo!

Kudos on no longer being "self-proclaimed" by the way. I heard Demm and Dimmer (Kelly) speaking of your feat as it was happeneing. You're a braver man than us all.

    Eugene,

Normally, I would never be caught dead listening to 2GNC, but as you know Kevin is a fan. We happened to be out when they said.. "Next Eugene In A Dragster". I about crapped in my pants. Kevin drove around until we could hear it live. I just kept thinking, "My children are going to hear Uncle Gene come to his death". After it was over and you talked on the air. Kevin said.. "Oh man, That was cool". I said.. "No, It wasn't.". Chloe said.. "Uncle Gene is crazy.". We got home about two minutes later, went in the house while Kevin kept talking about it.

I'm glad you had a good time, and Kevin would love to do it with you next time. So.. Whatever!!
