Various Artists 'CMJ New Music: September 2002 - Issue 105'

The racing action at Bowman Gray Stadium was a washout last Saturday night. We got one Sportsman race in before the clouds urinated on my evening and kept me from getting a snout full of burning rubber. But I had a great time!

It was the first time that I have ever been in the Private Suites for any type of racing event. And I must say that I loved it! What’s not to love?

Buffalo wings, BBQ ribs, and beer. Count me in!

My thanks go out to Dan Barrett who was the Grand Marshall the other night at Bowman Gray. Mr. Barrett ran for North Carolina State Governor back in 2004 and walked the length of the state to promote his candidacy. It was an honor to meet him and I appreciate the hospitality extended to me. Dan Barrett is running for the NC State Court of Appeals position… Remember that come November.

After the race action was called off for the evening… I was invited to meet with all the gorgeous ladies later at a biker type of club in Winston-Salem . Since I’m loaded with testosterone… I did just that!

It was a little difficult finding my way around Winston-Salem. I don’t know the deal with that town. It’s like the town’s roads were laid out by moonshiners drunk on their own corn squeezings. Instead of following straight lines that make sense, they apparently chose to follow cow paths that meander along as if “direction” is a four-lettered word.

I drove through neighborhoods where graffiti mark certain territories and through the miracle of dumb luck, I actually found my way to Clemmonsville Road. I knew where I was at that point, so it was easy to find the biker type of bar. I got my bearings back when I found some stop signs without massive bullet holes through them.

80’s Enuf were playing that evening and I had always heard great things about them. But from what I heard… Their street cred is WAY too generous. Here are the things that I have ever heard about them… “They’re great!” “They’re awesome!” And “I’m having the drummer’s baby!”

Seriously… I made up that last comment for comedy’s sake.

The band was all right… But they weren’t exactly all about the 80’s. They led off with Cheap Trick’s “I Want You To Want Me”… A great tune in my book… But the song reached the top of the charts back in 1979 and the original was recorded in 1977. The bass player and singer wasn’t laying down the Tom Petersson bass line right either! I felt like throwing one of the free chicken wings at him, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it because they were so damn delicious.

Later on in the evening… They played Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers “Last Dance With Mary Jane”. A song released in 1993!

I’m sorry… But if you’re going to call yourself 80’s Enuf, you should stick with the music made and recorded during the 1980’s.

And sadly… I was watching folks roughly my age dancing and carrying on like they might have 20 years ago. I felt like I was at an oldies show of some type and it made me feel my age.

There was one slightly pre-geriatric lady that was dancing to the beat of her own drummer… During one particular line dance, she was all over the place line dancing against the grain and tripping everyone up. She was also on the prowl for some man-meat… She was strutting around the place in a slinky leopard print top that barely contained her 2 droopy water balloons of fun. I could barely hold down my Pabst Blue Ribbon.

It was all great fun.
