Various Artists 'The American Song-Poem Anthology'
It’s been a while since I wrote this… The title of each blog is the musical choice of the day for me. It’s the only thing that I’ll be listening to in the truck as I navigate the streets of Greensboro. Today, I will have the windows down and blasting out “I Lost My Girl To An Argentinian Cowboy” or “I Like Yellow Things” with a big goofy smile on my face.
And this particular musical choice was discovered when I was doing a college radio show on Guilford College’s WQFS called ‘The Non-Conformist Cult Radio Show’. I aired a song from ‘The American Song-Poem Anthology’ every week as I giggled my ass off with the listeners calling in wondering what the hell I was playing.
Feel free to read about my musical selection of the day here. And be sure to read the customer reviews too! Don’t forget to listen to the samples!
I can’t seem to get the title song out of my head. I walk around singing… “Do you know the difference between big wood and brush” all the time. I’ll just walk into Ronie’s office, sing that part, the only part I know, and simply walk away leaving her wondering about my mental state of being. I’ll roam the halls of Dick Broadcasting singing and swinging with the only part of the song I know over and over again. And if I see more of Josie today… I’m sure she’ll put me out of my song singing misery as our coworkers stand around cheering and demanding that I bleed profusely.
I walk out to my truck, I’m singing it. I’m singing it while I answer Mother Nature’s call. My brain just slips out of gear and I’m singing… “Do you know the difference between big wood and brush.”
I think it’s my brain’s way of NOT going crazy with my very busy schedule this month.
It started a long time ago… I shall explain.
When I worked at the Capitol Records distribution center… We would often find ourselves working lots of mandatory overtime. During one particular 3 week stretch… We were working mandatory 10 hour days with a mandatory 8 hour Saturday. And if you were feeling particularly frisky… You could volunteer for an additional 2 hours on those Saturdays.
When I get busy like that… Part of my brain takes over and makes its own brand of fun by making me walk around singing stupid things. Or singing songs that everyone knows and loves in strange, abnormal ways.
Right now, I can’t stop singing and serenading folks with “Do You Know The Difference Between Big Wood And Brush”.
I remember a few examples during those distribution days… I would stroll around the Capitol Records warehouse singing Cheap Trick’s “Surrender” like Bill Murray’s SNL lounge singer character. Once I bugged the crap out of coworkers by constantly singing the theme from The Love Boat with a bad foreign accent.
And it didn’t stop there… For one whole 10 hour day, I spoke like Elvis. Everything I said came out as if Elvis’ spirit was living in my belly.
My brain just has a strange way of dealing with stress and if you don’t know me… I guess you can consider yourself lucky that I’m not calling your cell phone to sing “Do You Know The Difference Between Big Wood And Brush” in your ear right now.

I think i would like a voicemail of you singing that! LOL
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have a sneaking suspicion you would love Wayne Butane (www.myspace.com/flamingcanine).
He's a sound collage artist and makes albums of spliced up sound bytes.
Truly hysterical. If you remind me, I will make some copies and send them to you!
