Queen 'Greatest Hits'

First of all… I’m sorry that I haven’t been updating like I should. Things have changed and I’m slowly getting used to that change. I appreciate all the emails and other inquiries.

Since it’s Sunday… You should know what that means… A new person at the top spot of my MySpace friends!

Since a few people opted out of the running… Brad Alan from High Point (a Rock 92 P-1) has claimed the number one spot with an amazing display of patience for alphabetical elimination to get him there. Drop by and show him some porn star lovin’.

This lady is killing me, folks… There’s simply no way around it. When I’m with her, not only does the clock and other time devices get thrown out the window… We crush them with hammers!

Let me explain…

Friday night… I went to the Greensboro Grasshoppers game for a 1075KZL van appearance. I plug up the van to play 1075KZL for the incoming crowds and then head to the Grandstand in left field to bother Germaine. It’s easy work if you can get it.

A little later… Kristina joined me for the game which we knew was going on, but failed to see any of it. We discussed our upcoming day and how busy we were going to be all day long. For her… It was going to be a busy day at work since it’s Memorial Day weekend. For me… I was working an appearance at Cox’s Harley-Davidson in Asheboro with 7,000 to 9,000 people expected to attend.

Both of us needed to be up early and fresh for the day… And later that evening, we were going to venture down south to meet her mother for dinner in Pineville and to see Cheap Trick (my second all-time favorite band) play at the 600 Speed Street Festival in downtown Charlotte.

Did we call it an early night to get some rest?

Hell no!

Around the end of the 8th inning, we walked over to the Left Field Tavern just to check things out (they changed ownership since I was last there) and have a drink. As it turned out… There was karaoke going on with Nathan. And let me tell ya… It was ON!

A K-9 cop from Asheboro stepped up first and damn… Brother Bacon could sing! I forgot the song, but he could hold his own. Then it was Kristina’s turn (a former professional singer). She got up and did her fave… “Me & Bobby McGee”… A song written by Kris Kristofferson with Roger Miller taking it nearly to the top 10 on the country charts. But it’s most famous version is by Janis Joplin and that was the neighborhood Kristina was driving through. Here’s a picture that I took with my camera phone… It’s not a good one because the light at the Left Field Tavern doesn’t make for good cell phone photography.

The song of the night didn’t go to Kristina… We would have to give that honor to Dexter.

Dexter is a muscular black guy with decent singing ability. He proved that with a duet along with another guy there… They did “Man Of Constant Sorrow”. He sang another tune that I can’t recall and a little later, he made his way to the table I was sitting at to thumb through the book of tunes. He told me that he was doing it for his fiancée… She wanted to hear him sing Skid Row’s “18 And Life”.

Knowing what I knew about the song and about Dexter’s abilities… I said, “Wow! You know that’s going to be a tough one, right?”

The song is a high key screamer… Sebastian Bach really set the bar with that one back in the 80’s.

Dexter knew this, but he didn‘t care… And he was doing it for love.

The song was WAY out of his range at times, but Dexter gave it all he had. As I stood at the bar waiting for my PBR… I had no choice but to salute Dexter’s singing with my disposable cigarette lighter lit and held over my head. It was truly a great moment and showed me exactly why karaoke can be immense fun. He was terrible, but he soldiered on with no embarrassment at all.

Kristina wanted me to get up there, but every tune that came into my head wasn’t listed in the big book of “rock star dreams”.

Tammy Wynette’s “D.I.V.O.R.C.E.” (I once brought the house down with that one at a company picnic), Cheap Trick’s “Surrender”, or even the Lenny Kravitz tune “Are You Gonna Go My Way”. There wasn’t even a decent KISS tune in there. Jeez!

Kristina suggested doing “Paradise By The Dashboard Light” with her, but I couldn’t remember the lyrics and I know that Mr. Loaf’s parts would easily show my limited vocal talents to be quite thin. She suggested “Ring Of Fire” and I opted out for the evening by confiscating the request form.

I told her that I would practice the Meat Loaf tune and that we should do it up right… Yeah… Like the video… Making out like Meat and Karla Bonoff did.

Is that going to happen? Will we glow like the metal on the edge of a knife?

As Kristina would say… “I think not.”

We’re planning another karaoke night at the Left Field Tavern and when they’re firmed up… We’ll let you know and we’d love for you to come on out.
