The Non-Conformist Cult Radio Show 3/12/04 #2

The weather this morning is overcast and a little on the wet side. The high temperature will drop about 30 degrees from the previous day’s high. It was in the low 80’s yesterday and it may hit 55 today. It’s that crazy North Carolina weather that I love.

On a day like today, I’d love nothing more than to lay around all day in bed with a special lady. I’m not talking sex… I’m talking about cuddling, talking, listening to music, reading, and watching a movie. The only times when leaving the bed would be permissible… Getting up to use the bathroom, getting a different CD, book, DVD, or getting something to eat or drink.

I haven’t always been the “cuddling” type.

When I was dating “Jones”, she was all about some cuddling. She would slink over next to me and say with her thick and sexy southern drawl, “Lets cuddle.” I wasn’t given time to even form a response before her hands were around me, a leg was draped over my lap, and her head was on my chest.

I would try to pry myself loose and say something like…. “It’s hot. I don’t want your 98.6 next to mine. Okay?”

As I have gotten older, I’ve become more of a cuddler. I was dating “Jones” when I in my 20’s and when I got into my 30’s, the “cuddling bug” bit me.

I started dating my ex-fiancée and that’s when I got the karmic whiplash from the “Jones” era. I wanted to cuddle and she NEVER did. Trying to get close to her was like trying to cuddle up next to a bucking bronco. She would push me and pull away. I fully got what was coming to me.

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve mellowed with age or what, but I’m all about some cuddling these days. Hell, I’m even wearing pink t-shirts to hard rock clubs!

I’ve never said never to pink tees… It just hasn’t been my first choice of color when it comes to my wardrobe.

But today wouldn’t have worked anyway… I have a lot of things on my plate to do.

It took me two days, but I finally finished watching the dreadful film Holiday.

It stars Kate Winslett, Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, and Jack Black. And for some reason, Eli Wallach chose to “slum” it out by appearing in this flick.

Holiday was borderline awful and yet I kept watching. I can’t even begin to tell you the reasons why I watched the whole thing. The film was total dreck and devoid of anything real.

Don’t get me wrong, I really dig a good romantic film, but this one is so sweet that it will make you double over and heave.

Two women (Winslett and Diaz) find themselves at the end of rotting relationships. They find each other online and decide to “swap” houses for a holiday/vacation. Blah, blah, blah… The film moves on until they each find the “love of their life”.

It’s total crap, folks. Jack Black plays a “good guy” who works as a music composer that scores films. And I just can’t take him seriously. Even though he’s trying to be a serious actor in the role, I just can’t get by his facial expressions. They come across as sarcastic and smarmy. He’s totally miscast in this film. He’s become the “new” Leslie Nielson.

If you’re into romantic films and you’d like to cuddle up next to the one you love, by all means check out Happy Accidents. It’s a romantic film with a slight sci-fi edge to it. It’s perfect for you ladies with a guy that’s not into romantic films. And the cool thing… It’s so undiscovered that when you find a copy at Circuit City or Best Buy, you’re only going to shell out about 5 bucks for it.

I gave Holiday 2 out of 5 stars. On the Netflix grading scale, that means I “didn’t like it”. Happy Accidents got the full 5, baby!

As usual… If you’d like me on your Netflix Friends list… Here’s my email address… eugenebsims@yahoo.com

Don't be ashamed of your cuddlyness, sir. I find it rather appealing, in a non-man loving type way.

Hey Eugene... you don't know me but I am a woman from across the pond (yes I mean England!)Anyway I have a couple of things to say.. firstly be proud to be a hugger... hugs are wonderful things and can warm the coldest of hearts! However, the other thing I wanted to comment on and believe me it is a serious issue.. the Spice Girls. Now forgive me if I am wrong in thinking this but you actually like them? I mean aside from all the little teenage girls who were fans because they simply didn't know any better and the men who had a fave spice to bed lol WHY would you like them? lol They can't sing... can't act and well the girl power thing was more than a little lame lol! So what is the attraction when you have a world full of proper music and artists? ;)

  5. Alana,

    "Serious issue"? Oh, that's rich!

Yes. I really love the Spice Girls. I didn't want to, but when I listened, actually listened, I heard LOTS of things that influenced their music.

I never saw them live, so I don't know if they can really sing. In my humble opinion, they can on their records. To me, Jimmy Page and Neil Young are two of the worst guitar players in rock n' roll, but I enjoy what they do.

As for their acting... We agree! Spiceworld was a disaster. As for the "girl power", I know they used it. I wasn't watching MTV or anything else popular with the kids at the time to really notice that bit of crap.

I love cheesy pop music. Hell, I loved Right Said Fred! If it's done right, it can be a beautiful thing. And to me, the Spice Girls made some beautiful and cheesy pop with all their influences bubbling underneath.

But wouldn't a world full of proper music and artists be boring without a few guilty pleasures?

As for which Spice Girl I would bed...? None of them really tripped my trigger. But if I had to choose one, I'd go with "Scary Spice".

  6. Oh yeah... One other thing Alana... Thanks for checking out my little part of the world.

Drop me an email, I'd love to ask you a few questions.... eugenebsims@yahoo.com

LOL and OMG what do I comment on first!!!

Ok first of all Good morning !:-D and thank you for the reply.

Hmmm lots of things that influenced their music... ohhh like? and don't tell me your a fan of the zig a zig ahh movement lol

I don't and never did get all the hype about the spice girls. They are not a real band they were put together to fill a gap in the market... and if they are soooo talented where are they now apart from all having failed pop carers (sozz for bad spelling lol).

I love cheesy pop (as well as music full stop) and there is nothing i like more than to go out with the girls hit the cheesy pop room of a club and dance and sing till my voice goes and my feet ache and the barman tells me I have had enough lol (joke). But please... they are not cheese they are sad!

As for their names... scarey, posh, baby, ginger and sporty... don't they sound just a little pathetic lol. I mean what would be your responce to a male group with similar names??

As fr guilty pleasures I can think of more fun ones that admiting you like the spice girls lol :P ;)

    Alana

I enjoy your cuddlynees sir, but not your love of the Spice Girls as a musical talent. Scary Spice is my favorite too, by the way.

P.S. Do NOT mock Right Said Fred. That was a fantastically bad song.

Finally, I always wanted to say this:

    "The British are coming" !!!!

Please ma'am, don't hate me. I mean no harm.

  10. Alana,

I cannot help but hear one of my favorite musical styles in the music of the Spice Girls... Funk from the 1970's. That first album is littered with it! The music is fun and catchy. And like I've said before, I'll defend them until my ultimate end.

If you don't see things that way, that's cool.

The Monkees weren't a real band. The Partridge Family wasn't a real band. And yet, I love them. To me, good music is good music and fun no matter what the style.

As for their names... They were using the KISS rule... Keep It Simple Stupid. 4 distinct personalities (5 I know, but I never counted Sporty, she scared me) with easy to remember names. YES! It's marketing and it's damn good.

As for their failed solo careers... How many standouts make it apart from their bandmates?

It's rare. I only defend the Spice Girls because I think they were great. You don't have to agree and that's cool.

  11. Charles,

I'll never mock Right Said Fred. I have their only CD and I sincerely hope they'll reunite.

I am sorry I really didn't mean anything I said to insult ... was poking fun more than anything! As for standouts all I can say is Robbie Williams from take that... Justin Timberlake from NSYNC... Beyonce from Destinys child... lol :P

By the way I emailed you as requested and look forward to your questions lol. Oh and I added you to my msn in case you fancy a one on one musical debate lol

Woah, woah, woah. IN two sentences I saw the word combinations Jimmy Page/worst and Spice Girls/great? What is this blog coming to? I am not only disappointed that Eugene dissed Jimmy Page, but that Charles, in not one, but TWO posts, did not call him to task for it. Those, sirs, are bashable offenses! I cannot speak for the skills (or lack thereof) of Neil Young.

Also, the Monkeees were a real band!

Ohhh bring on the music debate lol... this could be fun! ;)

  16. Kim,

Jimmy Page can make some great riffs (when he's not ripping off legendary bluesmen), but he's a VERY sloppy guitar player.

Umm who is Jimmy Page??? Am I too young to know him? lol
