Warren Zevon ‘Reconsider Me: The Love Songs’

Do you ever spend a lot of time considering the how’s and why’s of your mistakes?

That’s what I’ve been doing over the last 12 hours.

I feel so stupid because I can’t understand why I got Larry The Cable Guy: Health Inspector from Netflix. I cannot understand how I even, of my own volition, put that horrendous movie onto my queue.

Let me try to put into perspective how I feel right now… I feel like I woke up staring at the ceiling of a stranger’s house after a long hard night of drinking. Suddenly, I realize that I’m not alone and when I look over to who is lying beside me… It’s someone who looks like she could be my great grandmother.

Do you feel the full body shiver too?

Larry The Cable Guy: Health Inspector? What in Sinatra’s world was I thinking?

First of all, I don’t even think this Larry guy is funny. Secondly, how could it be possible that Larry, the fat and obnoxious redneck, would ever be a health inspector?

It was a horrible little flick! It failed my twenty minute test, but yet I managed to hold on for about 10 more minutes as I thought to myself… “There MUST be something to this guy where they green light a movie.”

Even the Jerky Boys movie was better than Larry’s piece of crap!

Thirty minutes and I was done with Larry The Cable Guy: Health Inspector and cranked up the rest of The Devil And Daniel Johnston.

Maybe a month or so ago, the Carolina Theatre screened The Devil And Daniel Johnston. I couldn’t see it because I was working and it was too late to get someone else to cover for me. Although I thought the flick would be “too indie” for Netflix, I searched and found that it would be released on September 19th. So I added that joker to my queue and I had been sitting on it for over a week. I didn’t really have the time to watch it and eventually had to break it down to watching in halves because I kept falling asleep when watching it.

I wasn’t falling asleep because I thought it was boring, I was drifting off because I was dead tired and couldn’t keep my eyes open.

I was first turned onto Daniel Johnston when I was DJ’ing at WQFS by fellow DJ and former Peaches Music & Video Chuck Carroll.

Chuck was subbing for Mad Dog on a Friday night before my show one night. I would tend to get in 20 or 15 minutes early to start compiling my “show stack”. And Chuck started playing this, at first, awful song by a dude that sounded as lo-fi and untrained as you can get. He could barely sing, but as I kept listening, I could hear the genius behind what my ears first heard as garbage.

The song was about the original movie King Kong. It was about 8 minutes long and was a fairly complete account of the plot line of the movie. I had to ask Chuck what or who the hell it was and he said, “Daniel Johnston.”

Occasionally, I would break that song out or play one of the many others on the vinyl album until the station got a CD of new material in high rotation. I can’t remember the name of the album, but a full band was backing up Johnston. My favorite song on the CD was “Girl Of My Dreams”.

Now that I’ve seen the movie that exposes Daniel Johnston for what he is… Musical genius chased by demons, unrequited love, and afflicted with manic depression… I want each and every one of his recordings. I even want to purchase The Devil And Daniel Johnston on DVD.

Larry The Cable Guy: Health Inspector gets only 1 out of 5 stars on Netflix. The Devil And Daniel Johnston get 5 out of 5 baby!

Dump Larry! And check out Daniel Johnston! You won’t be sorry.
