Queen ‘Queen’

In case you didn't know... The title of each blog is the music that I'm listening to for the day. And the blog may not even mention the musical selection of the day. It's my life so let me live it as stupidly as I can.

The weekend... Hmmmm... Where do I start?

Dwight Yoakam and a visiting friend from out of town, a pre-school recognition service for my niece and nephew, and being assaulted TWICE with a deadly weapon… That was my weekend.

I’m not going to say too much, but a guy bumped me with his Chevy truck not once but twice on Friday night. I couldn’t believe that he actually hit me the first time he did it. The second time… I kind of lost my cool.

I only wanted him to back up and go around some parked cars, but the guy just went off on me. He yelled that he wasn’t backing up, revved his engine, and bumped me with his small pick-up. I motioned with my hands and said, “Sir… You need to back up.”

Then he assaulted me a second time with his Chevy. He slammed the gearshift on the column up into the park position and got out. “You looking for trouble?” he asked with wild eyes.

“Yeah,” I said to his face.

I was very angry that this idiot was trying to drive around in an area filled with at least 300 spectators. And besides, he had just hit me twice with his vehicle. Someone pulled me away from him and he got back into his truck and drove around our broadcast area.

Luckily, for that moron, no one got hurt.

My friend Allyson and I went to see Dwight Yoakam on Saturday night in downtown Winston-Salem. She bitched about how early we were going because I wanted to get there in time to get a decent spot for our chairs. We got there and a decent spot was found. And besides, I wanted to see the local opening bands.

I couldn’t find my friend Bebo who leaves comments about this blog from time to time. We were going to call each other, but stupid me left my cell phone in the truck. And once you were in Corpening Plaza, there was no leaving because you weren’t allowed back in.

I got a little confused about the opening band, I couldn’t remember if it was the Truck Stop Preachers or the Drive-by Truckers. It didn’t matter because I had read good things about each band. The word “truck” being involved with both band names confused me.

As it turned out, the Truck Stop Preachers opened up for Dwight and I ended up multi-tasking for most of their performance. I held it together and managed to be cool about Allyson’s incessant chatter. I tried listening to her because we hadn’t had a good visit in a long time. I also tried listening to the Truck Stop Preachers because they were good and entertaining.

She finally caught a whiff of me trying to pay attention to the band and said, “You want me to shut up, don’t cha?”

“Well, I didn’t want to put it that way,” I said, “But yeah.”

I didn’t keep track but I think her silence lasted about 1 song. But honestly, it was acceptable because I hadn’t seen her in a long time.

When I was wrangling some beer for Allyson and myself, I ran into old school mate Chuck Biggs and his wife. And it wasn’t long after that when Chris and Beth Demm walked up. We made some room where we were sitting because most of the space had been taken up by the thousand and change in the audience.

When Dwight and band were covering Cheap Trick’s “I Want You To Want Me”, Demm leaned up and said “Worlds are colliding for Eugene.” He knows that I’m all about my second favorite band of all-time and Dwight Yoakam.

Later, Cambo Hines and his wife Lilana came over and hung out with us for a few songs. I hadn’t seen them in maybe two years since I last ran into them at a Warthogs game.

The four of us had worked at Peaches Music & Video back in the late 80’s. I decided not to fight it and went for more beer. When I got back with four tall boys for all of us, Cam and Lil were gone. Sure, I could handle two tall boys but not three. I was driving and I didn’t need 48 ounces of golden delicious before hitting the road.

Demm was gracious enough to take a tall boy off my hands even though he had probably made his quota of beer intake.

Dwight was awesome! He covered at least four songs by Buck Owens in honor of his recent passing and the audience ate it up.

My Saturday started with a recognition service at Lawndale Baptist Church. My nephew Preston was getting out of pre-school along with my niece Chloe. During the ceremony, there were an abundance of allegiance pledges. To the flag of the United States of America, to the Christian flag, to the Bible, to the Church, and a pledge of allegiance to pork products. There’s no wonder why anyone would be turned off by church schooling with all those pledges. I made the mistake of locking my knees and almost passed out before all the pledges were over. Good grief.

I couldn’t wait to get the hell out of there and left without any after-ceremony refreshments.

I managed to squeeze in several discs of Battlestar Galactica from Netflix during my busy week. And let me tell you this… Battlestar Galactica F’ing rocks! Forget that the show is considered science fiction. Get over any connotations that the show is for “geeks” only… The show is awesome!

Plain and simple… I’m hooked on Battlestar Galactica. And I’m talking about the new one with Edward James Olmos running on the Sci-Fi Channel.

I tried watching Date Movie and it failed my 20 minute test in under 15. It sucked very badly from the opening and I decided to let it go back to Netflix immediately. There was no need to waste any more time on that movie.

I still have Freedomland to watch and that’s what I’m going to do now. I will let you know if it’s as good as it appears to be.
