KISS 'Dressed To Kill'

Ahhhhh…. The feeling of having a day off.

I recently had one of those things and I enjoyed every slothful minute of it. I woke up and watched a DVD from Netflix. Then I did absolutely nothing for the rest of the day.

I didn’t bother to take a shower. I didn’t bother to get halfway presentable in the off chance of visitors dropping by. I only went out of the house to go to the Lab to write up a comedy bit for the ‘Weather Dave and Will Bastard Show’ (Sundays 5p to 7p on Rock 92). Hell, I didn’t even realize that I hadn’t brushed my teeth until I woke up the next day and felt that they were a little fuzzy.

Maybe I shouldn’t have told you about that?

Here are some of the DVD’s that I have recently watched from Netflix:

‘The Notebook’ is a great romance movie. I didn’t expect too much out of it since it was fairly popular with the masses. Generally, my rule of thumb tells me that if a large portion of the public overwhelmingly enjoys it, the movie sucks. This was not the case.

Even if you’re a guy, you will dig this movie. My only problem was the lack of nudity. I don’t want to tell you too much about it because I highly recommend this movie for a date flick. It’s way better than ‘Behind The Green Door’ and it’s probably more effective in getting a romantic response from the one that you care about.

‘Spanglish’ really sucked. I thought that it would be good because I kind of like Adam Sandler. I was looking forward to seeing him tackle a role that doesn’t require him making a stupid face or a dull-witted voice. In my opinion, comedy guys tend to make the best dramas. ‘Spanglish’ fell way short of the mark though. I knew it was bad within the first 45 minutes when I found myself thinking about other things that I could be doing. And, if I don’t watch the extra scenes usually found on the DVD, then I know for sure that I didn’t like it.

I found out that Jon Matthewz from 1075 KZL had the first two seasons of ‘Sex In The City’ and he was kind enough to let me borrow them. I knew that the show was a big hit since it ran 7 years on HBO, but I had never seen a single episode.

The first season grabbed me and now I am hooked. The second season has me wanting more, but the rest of the series are way down the list on my Netflix queue. I’ve got ‘Million Dollar Baby’ coming my way soon and then it’s season two of ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’. Then there are a couple of more flicks until season three of ‘Sex In The City’ arrives in my mailbox.

I don’t want to be known as a ‘Star Trek’ geek, but I have always enjoyed the ‘Enterprise’ series. In my opinion, it’s the best of them all except the original with Captain Kirk. That one has the good balance of campiness and science fiction to keep me entertained.

There’s a new show coming to ABC this year that I am looking forward to. Well, it’s not really a new show so much as it is a revamped working of an old one. It’s called ‘Night Stalker’. The original ‘Kolchak: The Night Stalker’ was a great show with a limited budget that came out in the early 70’s. It was a definite influence of shows like ‘The X-Files’.

Judging from the early teases, I have a few problems with it….

Number One: Kolchak seems to be a thirty-something. On the original series, he was middle-aged or even in his 50’s.

Number Two: In the original, the Night Stalker drove around in a ’65 Ford Mustang ragtop. That would make the car at least 8 years old and it gave the character a sense of depth. The new Night Stalker apparently drives around in an off-the-showroom-floor ’05 gold Ford Mustang. On one hand, I like the fact that they stuck with the Mustangs. On the other hand, he should be driving one just a little bit older and make it a convertible.

I understand that change is often necessary, but I don’t like the fact that they are messing with the “Carl” character so much. You know, giving him a hip new update.

Of course, that’s just my opinion and who knows, I may just like this show a little better. One really big point in its favor is that a producer from ‘The X-Files’ has a hand in it. It will be interesting to see if they revisit some of the scripts from the old show and seeing how the special effects of today will work.

I always liked the one with the headless biker motoring around and killing the surviving members of his old gang with a large sword. I also dug the one where a suit of armor was possessed or haunted and went on a killing spree using old instruments of death like a mace and jousting pole.

We shall see.
