Cheap Trick ‘Lap Of Luxury’

Last night, I had the pleasure of seeing the new film Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby. Yes, I said pleasure.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I didn’t want to like it because of Will Ferrell’s previous track record. I just haven’t enjoyed too many of his movies. But Ricky Bobby is a bit different. It seems that Ferrell did some studying on NASCAR and managed to write a funny script.

Sure, I had a hard time suspending my disbelief because racing just doesn’t work the way that it’s shown in the film. There are no real Cinderella stories where crewmembers jump into the cars and win a race from last place. At least there aren’t stories like that anymore. There may have been in the dark and sketchy past when the sport lacked the television coverage that it receives today.

The movie is funny and managed to keep me from getting bored even though I had a hard time swallowing the story. Even with two scenes featuring Ferrell running around in his underwear, he managed to get a chuckle from me. I reluctantly give this movie 4 out of 5 stars on the Netflix grading scale.

During the movie last night, there was a rather large man sitting a few seats from me. He kept talking all through the movie about what was going on. He was very entertaining because he had the enthusiasm of a young child. He kept saying things like “Oh NO!” and “He’s losing his mind”. I’d love to catch a horror flick with that cat.

I’m looking forward to appearing on the Two Guys Named Chris Show tomorrow. I’ll be the guest “celebrity” on the Closest to the Pin: Birthday Game in the 10 O’clock hour. And no, I won’t be cheating. I would rather lose with honor than win cheating.

I have been playing along every morning this week. I’ve only placed first once and the rest of the time, I found myself in mid-pack.

When Goat Boy went LARPING (live action role-playing) a while back, I filled in for him as the call screener. I got to play the full week and it was fun. I had begged and begged Chris Kelly and Deidre to play to no avail. Now, it’s my day to shine and win the caller 4 tickets to next Thursday’s Thirsty Thursday at First Horizon Park.

I’m a little better at Put Up or Shut Up rock n’ roll trivia than I am at guessing celebrity birthdays. Before I started working for Rock 92, I got to play Chris Demm one morning. I managed a score of 7 to his winning 9, but it was fun and I won an October Sky prize pack consisting of the VHS copy of the film, a Universal denim button down shirt, and a Universal duffle bag as a consolation prize.

Well, that pretty much does it for me because quite frankly, there’s not much going on in this boring life of mine. I’m looking forward to presenting the bands at The N Club Friday as Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot hit downtown Greensboro. I’m also looking forward to Cheyenne Kimball’s free mini-concert at Hanes Mall on Saturday.

If I see you Saturday, don’t be offended by my smell… I have a pool party earlier in the day and those set-ups and tear-downs can be a little sweaty.

Put up or shut up -- I love that game. I've always wanted to play Demm, but I'm usually at work. I'm off on Fridays, but have only been able to get through once, several years ago. I played Diedre. Beat her 8 to 5, but it should have been nine. I "froze" on a really easy question at the beginning of the game. Oh well.

  3. You know, Clay... The more I listen to that album, the more I like it. It's having the same effect that KISS' Unmasked had... Where I used to hate but I finally come around.

Will Ferell? Funny? For a whole movie? I'm just not buying it.

Kim, you could have just stopped after Will Ferell? Funny?

    I can't buy it, either.

Ugh. In other news, my son has decided to get into NASCAR. Anybody want to adopt a 7-year-old? I'll throw in a free set of steak knives...
