‘Hope Ya Enjoy It Eugene… I Did’ A mix tape by Wally Harrison

Sunday afternoon, I was in the shower feeling refreshed from my 11 hours of sleep and I was thinking… And I can get some weird thoughts. I can’t control when or where these “weird” thoughts come to me, I just let them flow. I was thinking about what was on my North Carolina Driver’s License. And in great detail, what silhouette was pictured on my license.

So I got to thinking… What do other people have on their NCDL?

I have a silhouette of the Wright Brothers taking flight. And, I got to choose what silhouette I wanted.

After talking with my parents and siblings, I found out that not everyone gets to choose what’s put on their NCDL. My mother didn’t get to choose her’s… The silhouette of the state.

Here are some of the results from my non-scientific, blanket text message poll:

Danny Fonorow (www.stickboyonline.com), Mike Klein (www.1075kzl.com), and Jason Goodman (www.1075kzl.com) all chimed in with “What?”

Patricia Sims (mom / didn’t choose), Joe Davis (Dick Broadcasting Creative Services / chosen), and Brad “Hinzy” Hines (www.790theball.com / chosen) all have the silhouette of the state of North Carolina.

Lisa Wall (cousin) first answered my text with “Huh?” Later she came back with the “lighthouse” that she chose on her NCDL. Other lighthouse people are Allyson Jones (randomly assigned), Tina Howlett (sister / chosen), Marcia Gan (www.rock92.com / chosen), and Allison Moore (DBC Radio / chosen).

Only two people came up with the Wright Brothers… Richard Heffner (future brother-in-law / chosen) and myself. And yes, I choose the Wright Brothers.

The list of folks with the State Seal was impressive… Katie (www.1075kzl.com / chosen), Will Bastard (The Weather Dave Will Bastard Show on Rock 92 / chosen), Mary Giddings (Left Field Tavern – Passion Parties / chosen), Carolyn McCallum (WFU / chosen), and Kristina Krautblatt (Portrait Homes / chosen).

Now… You want my theory? And, it’s just a theory.

If you chose the state silhouette, you fall a little more on the conservative side with patriotic values.

If you chose the lighthouse, you fall in line with the more liberal beliefs. Light equals optimism.

If you chose the Wright Brothers, you follow your own thinking and your beliefs reflect that. You can go either way depending on how you see things.

If you chose the State Seal, you want your NCDL to look more official and therefore you’re an illegal immigrant.

Again, these views are only my own. Please feel free to let me know what you have on your NCDL in the comments section.

I understand that a lot of you didn’t get to choose what silhouette is on your license. Perhaps it was extremely busy when you got your NCDL, I don’t know. But, if by chance you got something that represents your line of thinking… That’s even cooler.

I was driving back from Winston-Salem on Monday afternoon and for some reason, I thought that it would be cool to snap a photo with the camera sitting on Roxy’s steering wheel. Here it is…

Yeah, it wasn’t as cool as I expected but what do you want from me? I was riding the high of a belly full of East Coast Wings (www.eastcoastwings.net) and I wasn’t thinking clearly.

OH DAMN YOU! I WANT EAST COAST WINGS NOW!!!!! Thanks for making me hungry.

I chose the lighthouse for my license background. And yep, I'm fairly liberal politically.

Ma has a State, but she said she just told them to "put whatever on there." She says she thinks her last one, (retired in Feb) had the lighthouse.

I have a state too, but mine is a lowly id "Not for vehicle operation." I do not know if that comes with a choice as I don't remember being asked (in fact, until this post, I did not know there was a choice to be had.)

Charles has the 'expired 10/4/05 and needs to be renewed" license, but I cannot check its silhouette until he returns from his 4-day home.

I chose the state silhouette, but I don't think I'm conservative in my thinking (I try to go without labels, actually).

It's possible I chose ths state silhouette because if anyone asked me where I was from and if he/she was geographically impaired, I could show him/her my license and tell that person to look for that shape on a map of the U.S.

Wendy also chose the state silhouette on her license. I know she's not conservative.

  4. Hey... I'm still working out the bugs on my theories.

    Thanks for sharing.

I have the lighthouse... I suppose I'm more liberal, but I'm a little more fly by the seat of your pants mostly.

I can't remember if I had a choice or not... its been 4 years... ugg I have to get it renewed next July!!

Heather -- I just got mine renewed, and now they put your pic so that it looks like you have a REALLY BIG HEAD. I thought I'd give you something to look forward to.

Yeah, the big head took me by surprise. I went in dressed up like Reservoir Dogs--black coat, black tie, white shirt--to spice up my license picture (I was bored that day) and all I have to show for it is a big melon head taking up the entire frame. I was crushed because I hate wearing a tie and I dressed up for nothing. Damn the man.

Seriously, Brad... I feel your pain. It's like "OH, HELLO.... a BIG FLOATING HEAD" picture.

    Flattering. NOT.

Luckily, at my age, getting carded isn't exactly a regular event. The Thirsty Thursday bracelet brigade dude didn't even want to see my ID last week.
