Here's todays entry......

For the past several weeks, I’ve tried rather unsuccessfully to get my nephew hooked on ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’. He will raise his voice and shout “NO!” anytime that I bring it up.

I find it very disturbing that he would rather watch ‘The Smurfs’ or ‘The Snorks’ on Boomerang. Those shows suck for the most part. The only reason that I put it on that network is because of the lack of commercials. I don’t want him to be inundated with advertisements of stuff that he doesn’t need. You know, the new “Fast Fecal Racers” from Hot Wheels. Perhaps the latest action figures from Mattel, the California Republican Anal Commandos or C.R.A.P.

I also have a problem with him seeing all the ads for candies and sugary breakfast items. I figure that the less he knows, the better off he will be, and his mother won’t be pestered when they shop for groceries.

I’ve tried to get him schooled on the Three Stooges too. Spike TV is running them weekdays at 9 a.m. for about 23 minutes of Stooges and 37 minutes of male enhancement ads.

Preston only takes notice when the violence breaks out. He becomes all chuckles and belly laughs when someone takes a hammer to the skull, but it’s hard to get him started on it.

This morning, I think that I have figured it out.

I turned it over to the Super Station WGN for ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ and Preston was lying in the floor and he was watching. He was watching. Watching ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’! I couldn’t understand the sudden change. He was calm and seemingly enjoying the exploits of Granny running for Possum Queen of Beverly Hills. Usually, Preston will run in place, claw at his eyes, speak in tongues, and flop around like he’s on fire.

But I noticed something… Today’s episode of ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ was in color. Could that have something to do with it? Are black and white television shows and movies too much for him? Is he that shallow?

I can’t get him into ‘Mr. Ed’ or ‘Leave It To Beaver’. He likes ‘I Dream Of Jeannie’ but I have started to notice him not taking any interest in the B&W episodes.

What is wrong with the kids of today? They seem to have no respect for the classics unless they’re in color.

When I was a kid, I couldn’t understand why some movies and television shows were in B&W and some were in color. I thought to myself that folks only started seeing things in color somewhere around 1950. Before that, people only saw things in black and white. I remember asking my mother if she saw things in color. She said that she did and that figured into my theory because she was born in the late 40’s.

I never shied away from black and white shows and movies when I was a little kid. Partly because the only television that my parents could afford to put in my room was a 10” black and white set from Zayre’s. I’m not sure but back in the early 70’s when they got it for me, they had to sell the sister that I barely remember. I think her name was Daphne and she lived in the attic.
