The Non-Conformist Cult Radio Show 7/28/02 (cassette)

Remember folks, the title of my posts are from what I'm listening to for the day. I broke out an old tape recording of my college radio show.

Lets get to business, shall we?

This past Saturday, I was at a WKZL 1075 Pool Party happening at Hunts View Apartments here in Greensboro. It was another chance to hang out with KZL’s afternoon drive man, Jason Goodman.

I made a conscious effort not to say anything that could be misconstrued as flirty with any of the scantily clad women there. I kept eye contact to a minimum. I tried not to be my usual charming self. The charming side of me is so misunderstood.

No women were offended and no one was going out of their way to avoid me. The KZL Pool Party was a success all around.

I haven’t been updating this blog as much as I should. I was EXTREMELY busy last week. There were several Netflix DVD’s that sat on the entertainment center mocking me every time that I passed by.

“Ha, ha… You don’t have time to watch us! Ha, ha, ha! You’re not getting your money’s worth, you TV watching bastard! Ha, ha, ha!”

I watched ‘Insomnia’ on Sunday morning. That’s a very good flick. Try it out sometime. Al Pacino and Robin Williams, nothing more to say. Oh yeah, Hillary Swank (Oscar winner) is in the film too. I don’t want to tell you too much because the fun is watching it all unfold in front of you.

I’m finally getting to see the first season of ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’. I came along late with that series. I started catching the show about midway of season three. And in my humble opinion, it is the best of all the ‘Star Trek’ series.

I have never really been a Trekkie or Treker, I always dismissed anything past the original series as something meant for sci-fi geeks. Jonathan Everett started watching and taping all of the ‘Next Generation’ series when they were coming out in the late 80’s or early 90’s. (See, I don’t even know when it began. I’m no Star Trek geek!) I dug the original with Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. I thought that a new updated series was something sort of unholy to even think about.

A couple of years ago, Jonathan gave me all of those tapes because he had started purchasing ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ on DVD. He didn’t need them anymore and he told me to open my mind and watch them. And I could do whatever I wanted to do with the tapes, watch them or throw them away.

I did see the ‘First Contact’ movie and I liked that so, I thought I’d give the series a shot. I discovered that the series wasn’t so bad after all. It wasn’t as technical and geeky as I had previously thought. It was actually good and I was mildly surprised. My only complaint… The show was too politically correct and that made Captain Picard seem like a wimp.

‘Deep Space Nine’ was really good. I like that show because none of the characters really liked each other. It wasn’t all a “happy family” type of show like it’s predecessors.

‘Voyager’ was okay… I still haven’t seen all of those yet. I’m thinking about adding it to my queue on Netflix. I feel that the only reason that the show survived so long was because they always had Jeri Ryan running around in a skin-tight outfit. For the record, she doesn’t do anything for me.

Unlike all of those spin-offs that I just listed off, ‘Enterprise’ takes place long before Captain Kirk is even born. Yeah, the heart of political correctness is beating on the show… BUT! Captain Archer is a butt kicker! He’s more like Kirk than all of the other Captains in the series that I’ve mentioned.

There are no lecherous people aboard the Enterprise and I miss that. I always liked the fact that Captain Kirk was scoring as many space babes as he possibly could. Kirk was an equal opportunity lover and he promoted love and sexual understanding everywhere that he went. Note to all of you that have seen the show… Did you ever notice that Kirk was always putting on his shoes? That’s because the censors wouldn’t allow him to be shown in bed with his space babe conquests.

Okay… That’s about all I can squeeze out of my head right now.

Here’s a post that I never had time to upload last week.

I’m making this entry short; I’m a very busy guy again these days.

I was delighted to find ‘The Tick’ cartoon series playing again on the Toon Disney channel. It’s “all part of Jetix”, they say. I don’t care, I’m happy about it.

I’ve been taping every episode and showing them the next day to my nephew, Preston. He’s seen my unopened and mint condition Tick action figures and he’s been asking about them ever since he laid his eyes upon them. He’s dying to open then up and play with them. I simply cannot do it.

Yeah, I’m still a geeky boy inside.

So now I’m searching eBay for some cheap, opened figures to appease him because he is digging the show. I don’t think that he gets all the humor but he laughs where appropriate.

He’s really intrigued by the “Snot Tick” figure. It’s green and you can see through it. He really thought that Chairface Chippendale was really weird. You see… Chippendale has a chair for a head.

We just got through watching ‘The Tick vs. Dinosaur Neil’ and he thought the Tick wrestling Neil’s tongue was a riot. Then we put on ‘Batman the animated series Vol. 2 disc 3’ that I got from Netflix. It didn’t take him long to tie a blanket around his neck and start leaping off of the furniture.

I’ve been trying, with very little success, to explain how Batman has no superpowers. Preston just isn’t grasping it. Eventually, he will learn about how cool Batman really is.

I thought about taking him to the new ‘Batman Begins’ but I have a feeling that it’s a little too dark for him. I’ll have to sneak off without him.

  1. I think that Whathisface #2 on STNG rivalled Kirk in the lech category.

And no, Capt. Picard, a wimp? Oh, that perfectly bald head, ooh...those Shakespearean tones... damn, you're right.

  2. Laurie... It's okay to think of Picard as sexy. I get the feeling that you do. I was referring to his indifference about blowing the crap out of aliens. Kirk wouldn't hesitate to send aliens to the afterlife. Picard was too much of a diplomat for me.

True about #2, Riker. He was a bit like Kirk. He really dug that sex planet... Is it Risan 4?

    I can't remember.
