Fishbone 'The Reality Of My Surroundings'

After this entry, I promise not to write about anything else concerning the Santana show last Sunday in Charlotte.

Deal?

When Tim and I took the Speedway Blvd. Exit to get to Verizon Amphitheatre, I was knocked back. I couldn’t believe how much that area has grown since the last time that I was there.

I think the last time that I was at Lowes Motor Speedway was back in the mid 90’s. I attended a spring Busch race. There was only Highway 29 running through there but there was much talk about things to come. Great things.

Last Sunday was my first time seeing those great things that were just talk back in the 90’s.

The most surprising thing was seeing my first Jack in the Box fast food restaurant. I have only heard about them from friends who have visited the left coast. In my mind, Jack in the Box restaurants possesses a sort of mystical value to them. To me, it was like seeing a Bigfoot in the wild. I practically pressed my face against the passenger side window to see as much as I could.

At that moment, I was sorry that my stomach gave out back in Winston-Salem for a Wendy’s double cheeseburger combo.

Now that I know exactly where that Bigfoot lives, I’m gonna catch him for my own personal satisfaction. Sadly, that’s one of the loftiest goals that I have in my life right now.

The only thing going on with me these days is exercising and television watching. A good life is a balanced one. I would like to claim credit for that one but I’m sure some infomercial barker has it staked and trademarked by now.

I borrowed ‘Firefly’ from my friend Sean Whitley. ‘Firefly’ was a short-lived show on the Fox Network a few years ago. The show was created by Joss Whedon (‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’). It’s now on DVD and I toyed with putting it on my Netflix Queue. For some crazy reason, I thought that Sean might have it already.

Sean is a BIG science fiction fan so; it wasn’t a stretch in my mind.

There are only 5 DVD’s in the collection and since it was short-lived, that’s the whole series in one package.

From the first 20 minutes, I became hooked. The show is or was, awesome! It’s a weird mix of sci-fi and western genres. I highly recommend this show to any of you with Netflix. And if you’re lucky, your local rental joint may have it too.

I remember Sean giving the show very high marks when it originally ran on television but I wouldn’t listen. I just usually dismiss Sean’s praise because he’s a self-admitted ‘Star Wars’ geek.

I get the same reaction from people when they hear that KISS is my favorite rock band. It’s simply a case of seeing the ugly side of ‘Star Wars’ and KISS geeks. Our admiration has blinded the general public because overzealous fans have marred our favorite things.

But, I’m not blinded by ‘Star Wars’ geeks. I just don’t see what all the craziness is about. I didn’t go nuts back in the 70’s when the movie first came out. I simply saw it with my family and went home to put on a KISS record. ‘Star Wars’ didn’t impress me to the point of worshiping it. I liked it and that was about it.

I think I saw part of ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ on HBO or something back in the 80’s and I never saw ‘Return Of The Jedi’ until the first three films were re-released almost a decade ago.

Those movies never really captured my attention and I still haven’t gone to see the latest and last of them, ‘Revenge Of The Sith’. I think it’s called that, I not sure and I don’t care if I’m wrong.

Just check out ‘Firefly’ sometime.

BTW, Sean you were right and I was wrong. Are you happy now that it’s in print?

I trust you are aware of Serenity, which opens September 30 (I think). Allegedly, the first of three Firefly films.
